Ragusa has about 73000 inhabitants (2007), it is situated inside the south-east hills of Sicily, it is also the main town of the Province.
Its origins are ancient, from antiquity, with a Sicule settlement attested since the second part of the IIth millennium BC on the actual place of the Ibla district, the oldest part of the city on a promontory.
In front of Ragusa Ibla - the oldest city - the Ragusa Nuova district was built on the hill around Ibla after the earthquake which devastated the region in 1693.
Ragusa was included with seven other cities of the south-east of the island in the UNESCO patrimony as baroc cities of the Noto' valley.
